AWS adds FHIR capabilities to support ONC and CMS compliance

AWS this week announced three new enhanced FHIR features for Amazon HealthLake, providing health IT customers with a fully managed service to meet some of the latest interoperability standards. from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as well as the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.

WHY IT IMPORTANT

New capabilities make it easier for healthcare organizations to leverage data from multiple systems, applications, and devices to build interoperable applications that comply with ONC and CMS rules. Wednesday’s announcement from AWS.

Amazon HealthLake, a HIPAA-qualified service for secure data storage, analysis, and exchange, now allows customers to share their data with authorized stakeholders without the need to export complex data. complex and implement complex APIs.

The goal is to reduce the burden of building and managing the underlying FHIR APIs and data warehouses.

With SMART on FHIR, HealthLake customers can easily authorize third-party users and applications to access FHIR data using OAuth2, control access to data, and implement granular access controls to ensure authorized access to resources, according to AWS.

The company says the HealthLake FHIR API can power interactive apps like a vertical medical record viewer to organize a patient’s medical history across different data modalities, such as such as clinical, imaging and genomics.

The HealthLake Patient Access API enables EHR providers and other health IT developers to create patient and provider applications to coordinate care, improve operations, and empower for patients to connect to their care plans using information exchanged on authenticated FHIR resources.

When customers need to transfer a large number of resources, such as supporting payer-to-payer data exchange, they can use Amazon HealthLake’s FHIR bulk data access API to export the data. securely for all patients, a subset of patients, or all FHIR data stored on Amazon HealthLake.

Payers can also leverage this feature to transmit large data sets to aid in population health management while healthcare systems can use the feature to generate analytics, AWS notes.

The cloud provider says the HealthLake Analytics module can automatically convert transactional data in FHIR into a flat column format in Apache Iceberg tables, saving time and effort in building and maintaining databases. complex data paths.

AWS Analytics and AI/ML services can then analyze the data and unlock use cases like SQL analytics on clinical data, population health, and clinical decision support. They can also train large linguistic models on their own data or draw conclusions from their existing models for use cases like disease prediction and risk stratification.

Greenway Health is one company that says it plans to leverage Amazon HealthLake to accelerate innovation.

David Cohen, director of product and technology at Greenway, said: “HealthLake Managed Services enable Greenway to focus more research and development resources on value-added healthcare innovation “.

“Integrated domain-specific AWS capabilities including Comprehend Medical, HealthLake Analytics, and AI/ML tools open up a new area of opportunity for us to deliver value to our customers,” he said. .

The Amazon HealthLake FHIR SMART capability, patient access API, and FHIR Bulk Data API are now available in preview in all regions where Amazon HealthLake is generally available, AWS said.

TREND TO BIGGER WOMAN

Under the 21st Century Cures Act, the mass FHIR access API “must also be accessible in all certified medical IT” so that any organization using the EHR can access all data. US Core data on interoperability across their populations.

Secure exchange using FHIR – flexible for both document and data level exchanges – can lead to better clinical decisions, clinical trials, and operational efficiencies.

Because broader adoption of mass FHIR could improve a wide range of health care uses, from population health management and care coordination to health equity, across networks, Several organizations, including the ONC, formed a new coalition in April to promote wider use.

With the Mass FHIR Access API, “physicians and ACOs can access their population claims data for therapeutic use” and develop other new methods to measure quality, Dr. Kenneth Mandl, clinical informatics leader at Harvard Medical School.

APIs open up access to patient-level data across the entire patient spectrum with “access at the touch of a button,” he said. Healthcare IT News before his HIMSS23 presentation.

ON PROFILE

“Amazon HealthLake Managed Services reduces the burden of building and maintaining the underlying FHIR API and infrastructure,” said Pandian Velayutham, senior engineering manager for MEDHOST, another AWS customer. .

“This allows us to focus on rapidly building innovative applications for our customers,” he said. “We are also actively collaborating with AWS to explore Amazon Comprehend Medical, HealthLake Analytics, and other AI/ML tools to build innovative applications, reduce operational burdens for our customers, and help improve the overall quality of care.”
