Avatar 4 & 5: James Cameron May Not Direct A Sequel, Here’s Why

James Cameron, who directed Avatar: The Way of Water and is working on the Avatar 3 sequel, may not return for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 as he has plans to do “some other stuff”. In a new interview, TitanicThe filmmaker says he could “hand over power” to another director, if he can’t fit the proposed sequels into his schedule. Cameron, however, isn’t giving any hints as to who is likely to take over as director as he steps aside, suggesting that he may not have a replacement right now.

Cameron told Empire: “The Movie Avatar they themselves are the all-consuming type. I also have some other stuff I’m developing that’s very interesting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if it’s after three or four hours – I’ll want to hand the baton over to a director I trust to take over, so I can do some work. Another thing that I am also interested in. Or maybe not. I do not know.”

The veteran director further revealed that while Avatar 3 is a padlock, the fate of the sequels will depend on “market forces”. Cameron added that he’s, in a way, hoping to make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 because they’re part of “one big story.”

While nothing is certain, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Cameron actually went this route after Avatar 3. He previously hired Robert Rodriguez to direct the cyberpunk moderator led by Rosa Salazar, Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron originally wanted to adapt that for the big screen, but he was tied up with Avatar: The Road of Water.

Cameron, meanwhile, is awaiting the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which has garnered a lot of attention due to almost wordless teaser. The sequel to the 2009 sci-fi film Avatar featured by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, who reprise the roles of Jake Sully and Neytiri from the first film, respectively. The likes of Stephen Lang, Dileep Rao and Matt Gerald are also returning as their respective characters from Avatar. Lang and Gerald make an interesting appearance in Avatar: The Way of Water even though their characters died in the first film.

Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel and CJ Jones are the new additions to Avatar The universe.

Avatar: The Way of Water releases December 16 in India in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Second letter Avatar the movie will be followed by three sequels with Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 scheduled for December 2024, December 2026 and December 2028 respectively. Cameron may not return in person. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.
