Australians spent about $67 billion on new cars last year.
This astronomical figure reflects a record number of cars leaving showrooms in 2024 and skyrocketing new car prices.
The largest estimated expenditure is on Ford Rangeras Blue Oval buyers spent more than $4.3 billion to park one in their driveway.
Next is Toyota Hilux at nearly $3.5 billion, then Tesla Model Y at 2.5 billion USD and Toyota land cruiser at just over 2 billion USD.
Estimates of gallery spending come from a new website, Beepcreated to track showroom prices in Australia.
Car expert also provides accurate data on the average price of new cars with our Sales Price Report.
They compiled this estimate using an analysis of car sales by model last year, then applying price data to each model, although admitting that the numbers are not complete. Completely accurate without access to the actual transaction price of the vehicle.
“It’s a top-level view and doesn’t adjust for variables like different sales channels – demos, company groups, etc. – but I don’t think it will have a significant change in estimates ,” co-founder of BeepRob Leigh, said Car expert.
Car expert previously attempted to obtain figures on new car spending from both the Australian Motor Dealers Association and the Federal Chamber of Motor Industry, but both organizations said they did not track these details .
Spending estimates are based on analysis of 246 individual models, from Alfa Romeo Giulia arrive Volvo XC90and a record total of 1,216,780 vehicles delivered in calendar year 2023.
Based on these figures, the average price of new cars sold in 2023 is $61,937.
They estimate the average new car price in showrooms today is nearly $103,000, although this figure is based only on price lists and does not take into account delivery. As a result, the prices of luxury brands including Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren are skewed.
The website also tracks the rise and fall of car prices, with Mr Leigh reporting that Ford had the biggest showroom sticker increase over the past year at 20.9 per cent. Next is Toyota with 10.5% and Hyundai with 8.9%.
In contrast, prices of Mini models decreased by 10.8%, followed by Alfa Romeo with 9.1% and Tesla prices decreased by 7.7%.
