Only 8 months – but it’s a start.

Climate change protester blocking Sydney Harbor Bridge sentenced to months in prison

A climate change protester who partially blocked the Sydney Harbor Bridge earlier this year has been sentenced to a minimum of eight months in prison.

Protest action by Deanna Maree Coco, also known as Violet Coco, on April 13 saw a lane of traffic blocked by a vehicle she was driving and a fire burning.

Coco protested as part of the newly formed climate activist group Fireproof Australia, which describes itself as “a civil protest campaign proportional to the existential threat we face face”.

UN ‘alarmed’ that a climate protester who has set up an illegal roadblock will go to jail

If Deanna Coco and her friends had waved a few banners on the sidewalk, or coordinated with the police to organize a well-managed street march to minimize disruption, then I defended her right to speak in public. But Deanna Coco has gone beyond public speaking.

Why are Coco and her friends causing all this disruption?

Surprisingly, some of their claims appear to be quite reasonable on the surface. I really agree with most of the first half of Fireproof Australia “about us” page.

The need to strengthen Australia’s unfortunate shortage of aerial firefighting aircraft is a number one priority fireproof catalog.

Other inquiries about the top half of the pagesmoke-proof hospitals, schools and nursing homes, and better care for people whose lives have been ruined by inadequate government fire risk management, I can imagine myself signing a petition with a list like that.

But read deeper Page“how do we plan to get there”, all go wrong. “… Firefighting Australia is a civil protest campaign proportional to the existential threat we face…”. Not a self-description that conveys dedication to peaceful persuasion.

This group cleverly claims that they will always stay out of the way for ambulances and police cars with flashing lights – but if they block all other traffic how can the police cars or ambulances arrive? anywhere near the Fireproof Australia roadblock, so they might be allowed to pass?

in my opinion Fireproof Australia is a group of radical green fascists who are trying to disguise themselves under the guise of respectable policy demands.

Personally I don’t think 8 months will stop green extremists like Deanna Coco, but at least Australian politicians have started to accept that they have to kick these guys off the streets, to protect the public. them from their illegal roadblocks and other acts. discontinuity. It is hoped that pressure from angry members of the public will push jail time higher, until the punishment is enough of a deterrent to convince the green fanatics to behave according to the law.
