Australian professors push for $275/ton The Social Cost of CO2 – Rising With That?

Essay by Eric Worrall

The “health benefits” of pricing CO2 and reducing CO2 emissions include walking and cycling more.

Australia finally has a new climate law. Now, let’s take a good look at the staggering social cost of carbon

The federal government’s climate change bill through the Senate on Thursday. Among the new quests Climate Change Act are assessments of the social, employment and economic benefits of climate change policies.

One Letters we published today in The Lancet Planetary Health outlining the importance of measuring the impacts of climate change on human health when assessing the social cost of carbon.

A study this month in Nature put the global social cost of carbon at AU$275 per ton of CO₂ release. Effects on health (49%) and Agriculture (45%) accounts for the majority of these.

Calculating the social cost of carbon will lead to investment and policy decisions that support emission reductions. It will also prevent support for projects that increase emissions, such as new coal mine.

Australia’s new annual climate change statement should also explicitly consider the health benefits of climate policies. These are likely to include fewer respiratory illnesses as a result of cleaner air and increased mobility associated with active transportation choices such as walking and biking.

I don’t know where the scientists hope the solar panels will come from, if they keep blocking the coal mines. The only current commercial process for producing silicon for solar panels requires reacting pure silica with large amounts of coal. This is why The slave factories in Xinjiang are one of the major centers of solar panel production globally – Xinjiang has a large amount of coal needed.

49% health benefits from walking or cycling more – what they’re really saying is that they take away people’s choice, to make them healthier. Is this really the world we want, where others dictate our health choices? Maybe some of us could exercise more, but if everyone were really valuing their cars in carbon taxes, we know everyone, or know of those who would be in trouble. cycling difficulties everywhere, even if this is the only option. Personally, I can’t cycle anymore, due to a sports injury.

But the real absurdity of demanding the high social cost of CO2 is the claim that global warming will lead to substantial agricultural losses. Even NASA admits it the world is green.

Looking back on the warm times that have passed, like Cretaceous period (the age of dinosaurs) or the extreme warmth of Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximumwhen conditions are so abundant Our primate ancestors spread from Africa to much of Eurasia and the AmericasAs far as Greenland, the only “evidence” that warmer weather will lead to damage is the broken computer models used to make such predictions.

The Paleocene-Eocene maximum, hotter than today is up to 8C/14F, a lush tropical rich world stretching all the way to the poles, not a difficult place to forage.

So where is this great brown color, this age of widespread agricultural loss, which is thought to match the continuum of warming and increasing abundance that has led to the tropical garden that was once Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum?

NASA observations of green and regenerative climate studies during past warm periods, from Holocene Optimuma period of geologically rich recent geology that allowed our ancestors to abandon hunter-gatherer lives, build towns and become farmers, to periods of the extremely warm distant past , like warm period in which our primate ancestors spread around the worldtells us that CO2 and warmth promote plant growth and food crop yields.
