Audi will offer Verizon-powered in-car 5G by 2024



Audi partnered with Verizon to deliver in-car 5G connectivity in time for the 2024 model year. The technology is expected to unlock additional cellular services (including personalized content) and new driver assistance features, among other functions.

Compatible cars will be able to connect to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, which the carrier calls the highest performing 5G connectivity. Bringing faster internet speeds into the vehicle will make it easier for passengers to download or stream content on the go, allow cars to receive over-the-air updates faster, and offer scheduling capabilities. HD and 3D maps along with cloud-based user configurations for the infotainment and navigation systems, according to Audi. In a nutshell, 5G promises to make features that many motorists already use a lot more convenient.

On a secondary but equally important level, 5G will make it easier for cars to talk to each other and to infrastructure. Verizon and Audi are busy developing mobile vehicle technology (C-V2X) so cars can receive messages and respond if needed. Some of the company’s models already have a feature called Traffic Light Info that tells the driver when the light should turn green; The C-V2X will build on these platforms, although exactly what the cars equipped with the technology will send and receive has yet to be revealed.

Details on Audi’s 5G rollout plan – including a list of models that will be eligible to receive the technology and its costs – will be announced in the coming months. Some other car manufacturers, including Hondais also working on in-car 5G connectivity.
