After no new inductees in 2020 or 2022 and only one addition in 2021—Emerald Downs Fame Broadcasting Publicity Manager Joe Withee—voting for the Race Hall of Fame Washington cars were continued in four categories: older male athlete, breeder (post-1980), coach and new category, owner.
The finalists in each category were: Horses (two votes)—Atta Boy Roy, Margo’s Gift, Pure As Gold, Stryker Phd and Wasserman; Coach—Mark Glatt, Frank Lucarelli, Bob McMeans and Blaine Wright; Breeder—Bar C Racing Stables Inc., Coal Creek Farm, Dunn Bar Ranch and Karl & Darlyne Krieg; and Owners—Paskey DeDomenico, David Mowat, Gerry & Gail Schneider and George & Norma Sedlock.
The 2023 inductees were announced at the Washington Annual Awards celebration held at the Emerald Downs on February 25.
The two horses featured are both classified bet winners and WTOA Sale graduates.
Atta Boy Roy (2005 horse of the Tribunal), is a three-time Washington champion with $602,276 earned in his 36-race career (three to eight). Of his five bet wins there was one in the 2010 Churchill Downs Handicap (G2). He also put in six other stakes (including three Tier 3 events) while racing for the Roy and Valorie Lund-trained Ellie Schaefer REV Race. Atta Boy Roy, 2007 Washington horse half-brother and winner of The Great Face at Longacres Mile (G3), was bred by Patricia Murphy and Rick and Debbie Pabst. His dam, Irish Toast’s staked mare Synastry was named the 2009 stallion in Washington. Atta Boy Roy was Washington’s top freshman boar in 2016, and went on to lead the state’s stud ranks from 2018 to 2020 before relocating to Kentucky.
Stryker Phd (2009 gelding by Bertrando) was bred by Thoroughbred Char Clark based in Spokane and Todd Havens. Stryker Phd has been three-time Washington Horse of the Year (2014-16) and twice a Longacres Mile (G3) winner. He also scored four Washington old horse titles while running for Jim and Mona Hour. Additionally, the $631,011 earner merged the Berkeley Handicap Category 3 and seven other bets over his 33-race career in six seasons (2012-17), in which he won 11 races. and place 29 more races (11 stakes). Successfully trained, first by Margo Lloyd and later by Larry and Sharon Ross, Stryker Phd is the son of the Smart Strike Mares Distinguished Scholar (voted the Stinger of the Year in Washington in 2014). ). He’s half-brother to two-time Washington equestrian champion Madame Pele and five other winners, including 2023 winner No Slo Mo ($100,640).
Beating a highly competitive group of coaches was Frank Lucarelli. The New York native has seven Emerald Downs coaching titles to credit and leads the Auburn track in wins and all-time earnings (1,122) ($12,706,343) and second in bet wins ( 56). Among the Washington champions he has trained are the 2017 Mach One Rule horse, two-year-olds No Curfew, Trackattacker, Time for Gold and most recently the Cobra Jet in 2021. Although Neal and Pam Christopherson’s Bar C Racing Stables Inc. based just south of the Washington border in Hermiston, Oregon, the couple sent many of their mares to their friends Melodie Bultena and Doak Walker’s Desert Rose Racing LLC in nearby Kennewick. Over the years, the Christophersons have bred seven Washington champions—including the 2021-22 champion sprinter Papa’s Golden Boy—under their own names, two Washington champions in partnership with Desert Rose Racing , a partnership champion with Desert Rose Racing and Bill and Carol Ginger, and a partnership with Ken and Pat Paulson. The late George and Norma Sedlock were the first to receive the latest Hall of Fame honors—owners. The Bellevue couple founded G&N Purebred in 1982 and the last runner (Five Banks) to fly their purple and gold silks arrived in 2007. In between they raced against fortunes. outstanding athletes such as the Washington Military Hawk champion (a hybrid) and Colonel Stevens, who not only spawned the Military Hawk – who came in second ($686,128) just behind Saratoga Passage among all earners from Washington – and Cadette Stevens. This year’s rollout ceremonies will be held on Saturday, August 12, one day before the Longacres Mile.
