Atta Boy Roy, Stryker Phd Join WA Racing Hall of Fame


After no new inductees in 2020 or 2022 and only one addition in 2021—Emerald Downs Fame Broadcasting Publicity Manager Joe Withee—voting for the Race Hall of Fame Washington cars were continued in four categories: older male athlete, breeder (post-1980), coach and new category, owner.

The finalists in each category were: Horses (two votes)—Atta Boy Roy, Margo’s Gift, Pure As Gold, Stryker Phd and Wasserman; Coach—Mark Glatt, Frank Lucarelli, Bob McMeans and Blaine Wright; Breeder—Bar C Racing Stables Inc., Coal Creek Farm, Dunn Bar Ranch and Karl & Darlyne Krieg; and Owners—Paskey DeDomenico, David Mowat, Gerry & Gail Schneider and George & Norma Sedlock.

The 2023 inductees were announced at the Washington Annual Awards celebration held at the Emerald Downs on February 25.

The two horses featured are both classified bet winners and WTOA Sale graduates.

Atta Boy Roy (2005 horse of the Tribunal), is a three-time Washington champion with $602,276 earned in his 36-race career (three to eight). Of his five bet wins there was one in the 2010 Churchill Downs Handicap (G2). He also put in six other stakes (including three Tier 3 events) while racing for the Roy and Valorie Lund-trained Ellie Schaefer REV Race. Atta Boy Roy, 2007 Washington horse half-brother and winner of The Great Face at Longacres Mile (G3), was bred by Patricia Murphy and Rick and Debbie Pabst. His dam, Irish Toast’s staked mare Synastry was named the 2009 stallion in Washington. Atta Boy Roy was Washington’s top freshman boar in 2016, and went on to lead the state’s stud ranks from 2018 to 2020 before relocating to Kentucky.

Stryker Phd (2009 gelding by Bertrando) was bred by Thoroughbred Char Clark based in Spokane and Todd Havens. Stryker Phd has been three-time Washington Horse of the Year (2014-16) and twice a Longacres Mile (G3) winner. He also scored four Washington old horse titles while running for Jim and Mona Hour.
