At least 15 dead in ‘devastating’ flooding in Kentucky | US News
At least 15 people were killed in flash flooding in eastern Kentucky following a series of hurricanes.
Torrential rains have devastated the area, with Governor Andy Beshear declaring a state of emergency in six counties.
“We are currently experiencing one of the worst, most devastating floods in the history of Kentucky,” he said. “Hundreds of people will lose their homes.”
Among the dead was an 81-year-old woman from Perry County, and local authorities say several have not been identified.
“Heartbreakingly we can confirm at least 15 deaths, but we expect that number to grow,” Mr Beshear tweeted on Friday.
“Our teams are working around the clock to help those affected. I want to thank the heroic first responders … and others.”
“This situation is ongoing. We are still in search and rescue mode,” he said.
Mr. Beshear appealed for federal help and said the damage could take years to repair.
The National Guard and state police used helicopters and boats to rescue residents inundated by floodwaters, while evacuation centers have been opened in state parks.
More than 24,000 households are without electricity, according to the website Poweroutage.us.
Flood warnings and watches remain in effect throughout the day for the eastern half of the state as well as northeastern Tennessee and western West Virginia, where more rain is expected to flood capital waterways. already above their flood levels, the National Weather Service (NWS) says.
