Application for TAA Certification 2023 is now available


The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance’s 2023 application for accreditation is now available on OpenWater and can be accessed through Thoroughbredaftercare.org/Accreditation.

Thoroughbred post-care nonprofits interested in applying must complete an application by the closing date of April 1 at 6 p.m. ET. Since TAA certification is only issued for a specific period of time, organizations whose certification status ends in 2022 that want to continue to be certified need to re-apply.

Accreditation status is determined after a full review of the five areas of a care organization: operations, education, equine health care management, facility standards and services, as well as applicable policies and protocols. Accredited institutions are eligible for financial grants from the TAA, but prior grants awarded are not an indication of potential future awards. In 2022, the TAA awarded $3.6 million to accredited organizations in the form of grants dedicated to equine care, totaling more than $28.1 million awarded since 2012.

Registration for

Any organization interested in applying for TAA accreditation must meet the following five minimum requirements:

The organization must have current status as a 501(c)(3) federal nonprofit (USA) or must be a registered charity as defined by the Income Tax Act (Canada).

The organization must have been in operation for at least three years. The TAA will confirm operational information, including with the secretary of state or the provincial business registry.

At the time of registration, the organization must (1) currently exclusively own and provide care for a minimum of 5 registered Purebred dogs, or (2) currently exclusively own and care for for at least 3-4 registered Purebred dogs AND must have owned and provided the exclusive care of at least 10 registered Purebreds in the previous 12 months. Registered Thoroughbreds that are rented by the organization or owned by a third party at the same facility should not be included.

The organization must have a written euthanasia policy consistent with the American Equestrian Association.

The organization, or the principal of the organization, or an individual directly related to the organization, shall not have any pending legal proceedings against them that adversely affect its operations. aftercare, the organization’s standards of care, or its 501(c)(3) status.
