Amplify Horse Racing, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit promoting education and careers in the Thoroughbred industry for youth and young adults, has reopened applications for the mentoring program for 2022. The process formalizes the process of pairing young people interested in pursuing Thoroughbred careers in the industry, with experienced industry experts who can provide guidance.
The initial pilot program, rolling out in 2021, paired 12 individuals from eight different states with industry advisors. Pairs worked together for three months to develop their knowledge of the Thoroughbred industry and create an education plan that included relevant resumes to apply to the industry, mentors assistance at industry events as well as applying for jobs and training programs.
Nearly all of the 2021 mentors have since taken steps to pursue a career in the industry by enrolling in college equine programs, being hired for internships and working in the industry, or Target the vet school.
The goals of the program are:
• Improve the accessibility of the Thoroughbred industry
• Develop newcomers’ understanding of the industry by leveraging the passion, knowledge and experience of industry experts
• Facilitating meaningful conversations between youth and industry professionals about job expectations
• Create a pathway to employment by connecting education and the workforce
Mentoring candidates should demonstrate a keen interest to learn and a desire to work in the Thoroughbred industry. The recommended age range is 18-25 and there is no limit based on academic achievement. Amplify favors candidates with little or no industry work experience and they must be residents of the United States or Canada. The application period for the 2022 program is from January 10 to August 12, and the program duration for each mentor-mentor pair is three months, determined by the acceptance and commencement dates. Eligible mentors can apply at any time.
Amplify Horse Racing is driven by Annise Montplaisir, the organization’s co-founder and president, and the Horse Education Coordinator for the Kentucky Horse Education Project Foundation (KEEP).
