American reveals more long-haul flights for summer 2023

Although the snow has just begun to fall, American Airlines is ready to welcome summer.

Carrier based in Fort Worth announced its 2023 summer schedule on Friday. It includes expanded service in many of the existing markets, as well as a range of resumption activities.

4 routes getting a big boost

Starting in April, American Airlines will add flights on four long-haul routes, including:

  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).
  • DFW to Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO).
  • Miami International Airport (MIA) to Heathrow Airport (LHR).
  • MIA to Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport (GRU).

American didn’t share how many flights it will add in each market, but it’s interesting to see the airline has promoted many of its “bread and butter” international flights.

Dallas-Fort Worth is Airline’s largest huband with service expanding to Paris and Rome, the carrier seems to think there will be plenty of demand for some of Europe’s most popular cities.

Meanwhile, from Miami, American will increase flights to London; because London is the headquarters of transatlantic joint venture partner British Airways, the route can offer a wide range of connections to cities in Europe and globally.

Additionally, the addition of the Sao Paulo route comes as Americans face increasing competition in central Miami, which was previously the airline’s gateway to Latin America.

Delta Airlines’ new joint venture partnership with LATAM is bringing more domestic and international services to Miami, and Americans may be trying to cement their lead in South Florida.

7 long distance resumption

American will also re-add service in seven long-haul markets, some of which it has not served since the beginning of the pandemic due to weak demand and delayed aircraft deliveries.

You will find the full list of continuations in the table below.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). HND. Summer 2020.
LAX. Sydney Airport (SYD). Summer 2021.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). LHR. Summer 2021.

Of these seven routes, only two will actually reopen next summer – Charlotte to Paris and Dallas-Fort Worth to Tokyo. The remaining four are back up and running this winter, according to Cirium’s schedule.

That said, flyers based in Charlotte and Los Angeles are probably pretty excited about these resumptions.

In Charlotte, USA unplugged on many of its long routes during the pandemic and it’s just rebuilding the network for now. This additional long-distance connection will benefit both locals and those living near Charlotte, who will have an added one-stop option to popular European summer destinations.

Meanwhile, Americans Long distance presence in Los Angeles has been on a declining trend in recent years. It comes when the carrier is busy building part of the Oneworld Alliance’s Small Center in SeattleWhere are the Americans? cooperation with Alaska Airlines adding more domestic and international routes.

American transits Los Angeles to Shanghai to Seattle and cut a series of other long routes from LAX during the pandemic. (The Americans planned to launch a famous new line from Seattle to Bangalore, India, but those plans has been removed indefinitely due to the pandemic and the closure of Russian airspace.)

American still operates a hub in Los Angeles, and the city will once again be connected to two well-known international routes.

Separately, American will upgrade its existing flight between Dallas-Fort Worth and Anchorage, Alaska, to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner this summer. The move is designed to capitalize on growing demand for outdoor destinations.

bottom line

While American prepares for the summer of 2023 with additional long-haul flights and resumption, it is interesting to note that there are not any new routes added at the latest announcement.

This is the complete opposite of Delta and unified airline — each of which announced major expansions ahead of what is expected to be a very busy summer travel season.

It’s still possible that Americans will continue with new routes for next summer, but the window of opportunity is closing. Airlines want to increase schedules quite early to stimulate demand for their new flights.
