The first of the new services will launch in mid-December, with all three starting in early January. Details below.
Pittsburgh-Cancun
The first of new routes begins on December 9, when American launches its connecting seasonal service Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to Mexico’s Cancun International Airport (CUN). The airline will operate one round-trip daily every Saturday through March 30.
Technically, the PIT-CUN route is resumed because Americans last flew the route in 2018.
Cancun’s popularity booms as tourism recovers from the pandemic. Demand for flights to the Mexican beach resort remains high, and some US airlines are ramping up service to the destination.

When it announced its Pittsburgh route, American billed itself as “the largest airline connecting the United States to Cancun,” with up to 40 daily departures from across its network. Most recently, American announced plans for a direct route to Cancun from both Cincinnati and Nashville. Like the Pittsburgh line, both will operate seasonally and on Saturdays only. In total, American will offer seasonal or year-round service to Cancun from 18 US cities.

City of Charlotte-Quad
The second service begins on December 20, when Americans begin nonstop service between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Quad Cities International Airport (MLI) in Moline, Illinois.
American flights will be operated by its regional affiliates on CRJ-900 regional jets. American will be the only carrier to fly non-stop on the route, which will be the third from MLI. American also flies from MLI to its hubs at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

MLI airport officials welcomed the new American flights to Charlotte, saying securing that route was a top priority.
“We fought for more air service during and after the pandemic, using all the tools in our toolbox to advocate for the Quad Cities,” said MLI CEO Benjamin Leischner. declare. “Charlotte tops our list for being the most affordable and sustainable route to meet the needs of business travelers looking to travel up and down the east coast, as well as leisure travelers looking for convenient service to Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.”
Washington, DC-Wichita
American’s Washington, DC-Wichita service will begin January 8, with the company’s regional affiliates flying a daily round-trip on Embraer E175 jets.
DCA will become the fifth American destination from Wichita, joining the airline’s existing routes to its hubs in Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix. Seasonal flights to Miami will begin in November.
American will be the only airline to fly non-stop between Wichita and the Washington-Baltimore metro area. Notably, American said it didn’t drop any other routes to add the Wichita route from DCA, where flights are limited by slots.

American said in a statement to TPG: “The addition of DCA-ICT will add service to a previously unattended route without exiting any other in-boundary markets. This shows that the airline has the ability to switch a flight from another route with many daily departures to make room for the Wichita route.
As in the Quad Cities, Wichita’s new route was praised by local officials.
“I’ve heard this void for a long time from business and industry owners, and I’m pleased that our hard work to fill this void is complete. It will also make moving to Washington, DC faster and more affordable for Kansan residents,” Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., said in a statement. declare.
