Apple removes these AI image-generating apps from the App Store- Learn about the new rules here

Apple is finally taking some strict action against apps that claim to use AI technology to create nude images of people without their consent. Apple has removed at least three AI nude photo generation apps that offered services like face swapping or ‘undressing’, where AI is used to remove clothing from images of people. These deepfake apps became popular through Instagram advertising. While Meta quickly removed ads that redirected users to download such apps, it took Apple a while to respond. Only after 404 Media’s report did Apple take steps.

What Apple’s new guidance says about AI apps

According to Apple app review guide, the company explicitly states that no app is allowed to promote pornography or bullying of any kind. The guidelines read: “Apps must not include content that is offensive, insensitive, offensive, intended to be offensive, extremely in poor taste or just plain creepy. Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornography, Chatroulette-style experiences, objectification of real people (e.g. “hot or not” voting), threats Physical intimidation or bullying does not belong in the App Store and may be removed without notice.”

The investigation discovered five such advertisements above Meta Advertising library. Three of these ads specifically promote apps available on the App Store. These apps offer features like inserting faces onto nude bodies or digitally removing clothes in photos using AI. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about AI-powered applications created by AI deepfake on the App Store.

‘New York Times and OpenAI lawsuit’ to decide the future of AI-generated content

Recently, Union Minister of Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar shared his concern about deepfakes done using AI applications. Deepfakes are becoming an increasingly major concern, with people falling victim to photos and videos that are edited or manipulated to make anyone say or do anything they wouldn’t do in real life. The Minister also spoke about the ongoing legal battle between New York Times and OpenAI regarding copyright issues. Chandrasekhar believes that the outcome of this legal battle will “define the use of AI in content creation.”
