After 2 years of waiting, the girl finally received a diabetes alert dog to help keep her safe.

In 2004, when Julia Duprey was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was just 6 years old. Her body cannot produce insulin, which makes it difficult to control blood sugar and can be fatal if left untreated.

The young college student was put on a waiting list for a diabetes alert dog, and after two years, her wish finally came true. Duprey was able to adopt his new service dog through CARES.

14-month-old Pretzel is trained to warn Duprey when her blood sugar is dangerously low or high. They are scent-trained and have the amazing ability to detect glucose levels by the scent emanating from their owner’s breath and palms.

When Pretzel smells sweet or fruity, it means Duprey’s concentration is high, and when he smells sweat, it means its concentration is low. When either of these happens, Pretzel will either stare at Duprey or bark at her to warn her.

Before Pretzel, Duprey monitored her levels with a device in her legs called the Dexcom. Unfortunately, the device is always incorrect, which causes a lot of anxiety.

But now that she has Pretzel, she has a new sense of freedom. Now she can move into a college dorm and not have to worry about fainting or falling asleep when the alarm goes off.

Pretzel is not only Duprey’s lifeline but also her best friend. She sleeps with Duprey every night and is always her company.
