Adam Sandler Has Been Named 24 Award Recipientorder Mark Twain Award for American Humor, considered one of the most prestigious awards in the field of comedy.
According to the Kennedy Center, Mark Twain Award “recognizes individuals who have impacted American society in ways similar to the famous 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, Best
called Mark Twain.”
Sander’s movie credits include Billy Madison, Gilmore is happy, Grow up, Big Daddy, wedding singer and Netflix movies Hustle and The Meyerowitz story. His diverse career includes acting, writing, producing and composing music.
Among other comedians who have won the Mark Twain Award are Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jon stewart.
Brooklyn-born Sandler was 23 years old when he joined SNL in 1990. His characters include Opera Man, The Herlihy Boy and Canteen Boy. He sang and played guitar songs like Lady Land Lunch and now classic Chanukah song where he lists stars who, like him, are Jewish.

When Sandler celebrated SNL in 2019, he sang a the song about leaving the show because NBC fired him as well as his partner in the comedy, the late Chris Farley.

“Adam Sandler has delighted audiences for more than three decades with his films, music, and tenure as a fan-favorite actor on the Internet. SNL“,” Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter said in a statement, “Adam created characters that make us laugh, cry, and cry with laughter.”
Critics have for years lost interest in Sandler’s work. In 2014, Mark Olsen wrote in Los Angeles Times that Sandler’s films “exist on their very own level of bad taste and questionable purpose.” In 2008, Bob Mondello of NPR Written that his comedies, “grossing millions of dollars, are inversely proportional to the wit in their scripts.” Sandler has speak he stopped reading reviews early in his career.
But while some might find Sandler’s comedies fallacious, his dramatic performances have received far more positive reviews. In New York Times, Glenn Kenny Is called the actor “revealed” in the Netflix movie The Meyerowitz story. The title for Justin Chang’s review of Hustle In Los Angeles Times read that Sandler “delivers one of his warmest, most tuned roles” as Stanley Sugerman, a former talent scout turned athlete.
Sandler’s two daughters may be among those scratching their heads at the announcement that he’s won the honor. At the recent Gotham Awards, Sandler was honored with a Dedication to a Performer award. He already has an audience in reading one speech he said was written by his daughters. “Daddy’s goofy filmmaking career, which began in 1988, was shaped by two guiding principles: people in prison needed movies and TBS needed content.”
Sandler will receive a copy of Mark Twain’s 1884 bronze portrait bust sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853–1940) at the Kennedy Center gala in March.
