Abandoned Pit Bull with frost stains clinging to towels to keep warm
A jogger in Branford, Connecticut found a lonely dog on their morning run. The white Pit Bull mix is alone in the parking lot, sleeping on an old towel. There was no one around and the dog appeared to be malnourished and in pain. So the jogger called animal control to alert them to the situation.
Officials suspect the dog was abandoned the night before, to fend for itself during one of the coldest nights of the year. In addition to other injuries, the dog also suffered from frostbite. But now, a decent shelter is giving him a safe space to heal.
Frostbitten Dog learns what love is
The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter put the dog in their care and named it Lincoln. Unlike most abandoned dogs, Lincoln was not happy to see his rescuers. Instead, he was extremely scared but didn’t have the strength to run. It was clear that someone had been cruel to him in the past.
Lincoln not only suffered from frostbite from a cold night, but he also had signs of neglect such as scabies, nail overgrowth and possible irritation from being kept in a bin with one’s own feces. Urine and feces can stain a dog’s skin if they are forced to sit in it for too long. Lincoln’s ulcers were so severe that he had difficulty walking.
Since being rescued, Lincoln has received round-the-clock veterinary care to help him feel like himself again. Every day, he improves a little more in physical health and confidence. The shelter staff showered him with love, which is something he may have never experienced before.
Lincoln’s Road to Recovery
Lincoln is estimated to be about 2 or 3 years old, and he was about 10 to 20 pounds underweight when he arrived. But now, he is doing much better because he has someone to take care of him properly.
“Lincoln has made significant strides in the 30 hours we have had him. A big thank you to the veterinarians and staff at Madison Veterinary Hospital. Bath pills, antibiotics and love are really working for him! ‘ writes Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter.
Officials are still trying to locate who is responsible for Lincoln’s pain. Security cameras may have captured footage from the parking lot, but police are still looking into it. Hopefully the person who hurt this poor innocent dog will pay for the damage they caused.
Many people fell in love with Lincoln, but he had so much more to do. He probably won’t be adopted for at least a month. Until then, the shelter is calling on animal lovers to contribute to help care for Lincoln and other available dogs. Any donation can make a difference in Lincoln’s recovery.
