A Tale of Two Covers « Photography by Joe McNally

Being late according to the blog world late, late is the word activity. Traveling. Mission in Romania, then the UK. Then taught in the UK. And now….holiday. A little downtime to kick off a great bumpy year.

Nice to report on the story of the two covers, just released or coming soon. One is the lovely, respectable magazine of Westminster Gray, Legendary camera shops define excellence. They have unparalleled knowledge and service to offer their customers, making it one of the most award-winning camera shops in the world. No other store in the world has ever been granted a Badge, which is a very special honor. And, Nikon owners The magazine is full of great articles and photos, looking at the constant conundrum called photography from every point on the compass—technical, historical, lyrical, photographic…do I need to continue?

other is Cubans see magazine, a bilingual, quarterly periodical about love initiated by Jennifer Spelman and Andrew Child, who has photographed Cuba countless times. Partnering with a formidable array of writers and designers, Cuba Seen is a tribute to the humanity and loveliness of this wonderful island. Images bring understanding and friendship, and that is the core mission of this publication.

It’s been a while since I’ve been lucky enough to get a few cover photos, due to the random nature of photography. I shook my head once. I have always worked (non-stop, boring, non-stop) on the benefits and advantages of versatility behind the lens. So I was a bit struck by the strange difference in style of these covers.

Sweet, simple Cuba photo with built-in light. Most likely a D810, or even a Nikon Df, with a 24-70mm lens. Click.

Truth be told, I’ve always loved laundry, go-seek paintings. Here is the back cover of the book, Baseball in America. I have to confess, it’s not really about baseball. Maybe, just maybe, though, it’s about the feel of the game, played at a simple level in the American homeland.

Fashion image on the cover of Nikon owners the magazine was taken at my best friend’s studio Gianluca Bertoneabout a chameleon-like beauty, Thai Dilima. Beauty light combo, D850, Nikon 58mm f.95 NOCT. Manual focus drops on eyelashes. DOF is extremely narrow. Eyes like crazy. Amazing makeup by Claire Piao. Foreground lights, backlighting, fancy lenses, moving parts, production values, studio time. Lots of work before the click.

Perhaps the two sides of the picture coin we are constantly tossing in the air. From heavy lifting and pre-visualization to fit the job to spontaneous gifts of light, gestures, and serendipity that amaze our lenses as we wander.

We must be prepared for both.

looking forward to a visit Westminster gray tomorrow and one DIRECT chat with Becky Danese and Konstantin Kochkin! Start chatting at 2:15pm GMT.
