After the most recent round of IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season at Virginia International Racewaythe Rennsport A truckload of four people Porsche racing carand all the related equipment, and returned to their South Florida race shop. At 3 a.m. Sunday, the thieves broke into the complex, jumped behind the wheel of pickup truckand drove the entire shootout to unknown locations. More than an hour later, the truck was disconnected from the race car and abandoned on a residential street in Homestead, Florida. That’s where the trail got dark, as the thieves apparently found and disabled the trailer’s GPS, run away with the racing cars and internal parts.

This trailer is easy to spot, as it’s emblazoned with RS1 team logos and graphics. The cars inside are Porsche GT4 RS Clubsport race cars with official Porsche Motorsport VINs, and they’re also easy to track down if they’re for sale. It’s possible that whoever stole the cars six days ago disassembled them for parts and removed the VIN-encoded chassis, but we can only hope that’s not the case.

Early Sunday morning, the two men drove into the RS1 complex and drove away. About twenty minutes later, the truck and trailer were driven out of the lot. Police and the shop owner have not said much about exactly how the truck was stolen, whether the keys were left inside or whether the thieves figured out how to bypass the ignition. Perhaps they had some inside information from a member of the group.

Regardless, the team is currently struggling to figure out how to prepare for the season’s next race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 19. It seems unlikely that they will be able to get four cars ready for the two-hour race. The team currently sits second in the GS points standings with drivers Trent Hindman and Stevan McAleer, just 50 points behind Aston Martin driver Matt Plumb.
