Rivian Travel Kitchen is no substitute for Camp Kitchen

  • A New Portable Camping Stove Designed for the Rivian R1 Lets You Cook and Camp
  • Two induction burners plug into any 120 volt outlet rated at 15 amps
  • Priced at $1,400 and includes a cutting board

Near the base of Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado, a group of journalists and Rivian engineers and executives huddled around a campfire. The flames burned brightly enough to break the ice of the evening gathering and overcome the anxiety of gathering indoors during a pandemic. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe took a break from coaxing our little ones to greet the small crowd that had come to the unveiling of Rivian’s first vehicle, then we gathered our plates to eat from RivianR1Tlike an old wagon on the Oregon Trail.

Extends from the gear tunnel of electric pickup truck is a camp stove. Chili and a plate of beans and vegetables simmer on two hotplates. The cook’s utensils are placed in a tray that doubles as a sink next to it. Storage shelves on the other side of the stove hold dishes, spices, pans, and other kitchen utensils. Dinner will be powered by the same battery pack that powered the R1T up and around Rocky Mountain passes at elevations above 12,000 feet.

The next morning, the barracks were destroyed and the kitchen seemed to have disappeared. It was packed for the next mission, lunch on the battlefield. Not in the bed, or the spacious front trunk, but sliding on an electric rail called Shuttle Tunnel into the R1T’s transmission tunnel between the crew cab and the short bed. The transmission tunnel remains one of the electric pickup’s big packaging advantages and the R1T’s most distinctive competitive advantage.

The Retractable Camping Stove and the Tunnel Shuttle electric vehicle originally cost around $6,500, but in late 2022, Rivian discontinued its fantastic all-in-one solution, turning the R1T into a motorhome, along with its still-existing roof tent. The hiatus became permanent, and Rivian’s reasons for stopping it are as vague as a sewage bucket.

Rivian now has a new two-burner induction cooktop called the Travel kitchenA temporary solution that seems to suggest that Rivian originally envisioned the R1T as an all-in-one adventure vehicle. Announced Thursday, the Travel Kitchen can collapse to fit in a tool tunnel, or a front trunk, or most trunks, so it’s not limited to the R1S or R1T, even though it was designed for them.

It plugs into a 120 volt outlet with 15 amps of current, and two burners share up to 1,500 watts It can be adjusted on a capacitive touch panel. Rivian promises it will heat food quickly and without smoke, and it’s designed to sit flat on the R1T’s folding tailgate and R1S’s split tailgate, or on any flat surface.

A Rivian spokesperson told Green Car Reports that running the burner at full power for an hour would cost 1.0% to 1.4% of battery capacityand can be used simultaneously with an airplane air compressor or other accessories. It is portable and the travel bag has handles for easy portability, but it weighs about Total 41 poundsSo sliding it in and out of the gear tunnel is not easy.

It cost $1,400 and includes a cutting board, organizer drawers, and tiny LED lights. Why not buy a cheaper one from the aftermarket? It won’t have the luxury of the Rivian or the custom fit.

Although Rivian dodged our question about what happened to the original Camp Kitchen, Rivian appears to be addressing that issue. A patent application published on July 18 shows a reimagining of Camping stove with built-in grill. The unit slides into the gear tunnel.
