If you don’t move, you run the risk of deep vein thrombosis, which is made worse by dehydration. Not going to the bathroom, that’s a bit stupid. If you need to go to the bathroom, you need to go to the bathroom.
If you refuse to urinate long enough, it will become painful and associated with increased risk of kidney stones and possibly a urinary tract infection, but unlikely someone could hold it long enough to rupture their bladder. Deep vein thrombosisDeep vein thrombosis, on the other hand, is much more dangerous. It occurs when a blood clot or multiple blood clots form in the deep veins, most commonly in your legs.
Sometimes, DVT occurs without any symptoms, but it can also cause pain and swelling. However, if those clots break loose, they can travel to your lungs, blocking blood flow in a condition called pulmonary embolism. It can also be fatal. And while rough sex on a flight puts passengers at higher risk for DVT, it can happen to anyone who has been inactive for a long period of time. If you find yourself suddenly having difficulty breathing, chest pain that gets worse when you cough or take a deep breath, a rapid pulse or breathing, or coughing up blood, seek medical attention immediately. It could very well save your life.
