The Polestar 3 debuted on October 3, the same day orders opened for the battery-powered SUV that continuously competes with the Porsche Cayenne. The comparisons are accurate, based on comments from Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath at the European News Automotive Congress. He said the first SUV of his brand will have a starting price of 75,000 euros and output around 110,000 euros. Because the euro and the US dollar are roughly equal, prices are likely to be similar in dollars, meaning somewhere between $75,650 and $110,950. The Porsche Cayenne 2022 starts at $73,650, the Cayenne GTS – six versions below the flagship Turbo GT – starts at $114,550.
This means that, like the Cayenne, the 3 will likely come in the size and finance between the Tesla Model Y and Model X. The Model Y Performance is 7 inches shorter than the Cayenne and starts at $69,990, the Model X uses a dual-motor. The AWD trim is 5 inches longer than the Cayenne and starts at $120,990.
We don’t have specs on the 3 yet, but we do know it will pack a two-motor powertrain. In the $53,300 upgraded Polestar 2 sedan with dual-motor, output reaches 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque as standard, hitting 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Those numbers can be upgraded to 476 hp and 502 lb-ft for buyers who choose the Performance Package, which drops the 60 mph sprint to 4.2 seconds. Cayennes in the same price bracket max out at 455 hp and 516 lb-ft combined power on the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche needing 4.7 seconds to hit 60 mph when equipped with the Sport Chrono Package. All of which means the model is set to challenge a Porsche, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the 3 were even more powerful. If Polestar hits its range estimate of 372 miles in the WLTP cycle, our version could do well over 300 miles in EPA test mode.
The 3 will go into production later this year alongside the upcoming battery-powered Volvo XC90 replacement, believed to be the Embla. Polestar will double its assault on the Germans next year with a Porsche Macan, a Polestar 4 rival.
