What is this? Auction really needed a few hard-nosed bidders. Tom Petty in 1965 Wild horse The convertible is scheduled to be auctioned at Bonham’s at The Quail this Friday, part of Monterey Car Week.
The auction house has set an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000, which surprised us because there are plenty of 1965 Mustangs that sell for that price or more. The car looks great in photos, in Rangoon Red over a red and white interior. But Petty drove it for about 20 years in the open spaces around his home in Malibu; no mention of restoration; and it says it “works very well”. So it won’t… break… but the emphasis that it works very well may be a phrase intended to divert from cosmetics.
It doesn’t matter. Maybe it’s pristine, maybe it’s not. Tom Petty’s voice has patina, so if his car has patina, all the better.
There aren’t many details about the Mustang, other than it’s nicely optioned. We can see wooden wheels and it has an automatic transmission.
But this is one of those auctions where they clean out a late celebrity’s garage and closet. In addition to the Mustang, there will be more than 100 Petty items up for sale, including:
- Yamaha Grand Piano. Estimated price $5,000 – $7,000.
- Painting of the Virgin Mary and Child from the 18th-19th century Century from Spanish Colonial School. Estimate: $2,000 – $3,000.
- Chinese carved wooden daybed, 20th century. Estimate: $2,000 – $3,000.
- Writing desk, 20th century. His and his wife’s initials engraved on it. Estimate: $300-$500.
- Voice Recorder. Estimate: $600 – $800.
- An Oak phone booth with an electric company automatic pay phone. Estimate: $500 – $700.
- US military style shirt. Estimate: $100 – $200.
- Huge collection of VIP cards, backstage passes and other cards. Estimate: $100 – $200.
- A pair of stained wood sofas upholstered in velvet. Estimate: $1,000 – $2,000.
While the car will be delivered to The Quail this Friday, other products will be sold online from August 29 to September 10.
