MediSecure hack exposes data of 13 million Australians

Around 12.9 million Australians had their health information stolen in the recent MediSecure hack.

According to the struggling e-prescription provider, who recently was placed under administration following a “large-scale” ransomware attack on its systems on May 16.

In the update, MediSecure said the affected individuals included those who used the company’s services between March 2019 and November 2023. However, the company was unable to identify specific individuals due to the “complexity of the data set” that was compromised.

The company added that some of the types of information exposed in the attack included personal healthcare identifiers, Medicare card numbers, prescriptions and medication guides.


Diabetes services added to VVED

The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) has introduced a new service for people with diabetes.

VVED Diabetes, launched in partnership with the Australian Diabetes Innovation Hub, will provide free video consultations for patients experiencing non-life-threatening complications.

Following this launch, Ambulance Victoria paramedics will work at the new clinic to test ketone levels in people with diabetes.

Earlier this year, VVED announced that it intended to double its capacity to accommodate more than 1,000 people per day, with support from more than $150 million in state government funding.


Magentus Introduces E-Prescribing on Charm

Magentus recently added e-prescribing functionality to its cancer information management system.

PAccording to a press release, prescribers can now create electronic prescriptions through Charm Oncology IMS after Magentus met the e-prescribing standards set by the Australian Digital Health Agency.

Qld pharmacy pilot program begins MedAdvisor software training

The Australasian College of Pharmacy and MedAdvisor have begun training pharmacists to participate in a pilot program to expand their scope of practice in Queensland.

According to the press release, participants are being trained to use the MedAdvisor platform to manage user accounts, complete patient medication details, message clinicians, use the Queensland Scope of Practice form when prescribing and set up booking availability.

Last year, MedAdvisor has been awarded a contract to deliver an enhanced version of the PlusOne pharmacy platform to the Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot Project. The platform includes a patient portal, clinical information system, prescribing functionality, secure communications and data analytics.


Seniors in Roper Gulf Get Access to Virtual Alliance Health Care

Roper Gulf Regional Council, a local government in the Northern Territory, has begun providing 24/7 access to online allied health services in aged care facilities.

Services will be delivered through a multidisciplinary allied health team from iAgeHealth by McLean Care.

According to a press release, the service will initially focus on providing in-home occupational therapy services, including adjustment assessments, physical therapy assessments, and treatment plans. Dietary meal planning, assessments, and monitoring will also be provided.

Then, Roper Gulf said it would expand aaccess to more iAgeHealth-related health professionals, such as speech therapists and exercise physiologists.


GoodSAM to Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government has partnered with the developers of GoodSAM, a free mobile emergency alert and dispatch app from the UK, to support first responders.

The GoodSAM app will alert first responders with registered defibrillators of people experiencing a cardiac event within a thousand meters.

Tasmania follows New South Wales in its application.ting GoodSAM to promote community emergency response. In 2022, NSW Ambulance has signed a four-year partnership to integrate the app with the ambulance dispatch service and public register to map nearby defibrillators.
