HIMSSCast: Interoperability – HIE and frameworks other than TEFCA

For all its huge promises in triggering a new set of rules – and indeed an easier start to broader interoperability across the country – the Trusted Exchange Framework and General agreement is of course not the only mechanism to promote more seamless data exchange between public and clinical health and other organisations.

We recently spoke with Craig Behm, executive director of CRISP — the regional health information exchange serving Maryland, DC, West Virginia — and its nonprofit IT support division, CRISP Shared Services, works with other outlying local and state HIEs from Alaska to Connecticut.

Behm talked about TEFCA, as well as how HIE and other regional health networks are contributing to the richness of the broader health data-sharing ecosystem, and how they fit into initiatives similar in the future. He also discusses how service delivery organizations can better collaborate with networks and exchange of information to enable stronger interoperability, especially in the areas of public health and syndrome surveillance.
