Pounce denies Brown sixth straight win at Lake George
Resolute Racing by Maul Under perfect control from Saratoga Springs, NY, native Dylan Davis, raced into the lane to win the $175,000 Lake George Stakes (G3T) by three-quarters of a length on July 20 at Saratoga Race Track.
Trained by Mark Casse, Pounce was denied a sixth straight win in a race won by trainer Chad Brown’s 2-1 favourite, Klaravich Stables. Oversubscribed finished second after running in traffic for much of the race.
“This means a lot to me. The Saratoga native, Saratoga High School… everything,” Davis said while still riding the winning horse, a 3-year-old mare. Look at Lucky who paid $13.80 to win.
“I thought I’d get a little closer, but they were really running through the first turn. When I turned her out on the straight, she responded really well. I needed the outside rider to help pull her up.”
It was Pounce’s second graded win since John Stewart’s Resolute Bloodstock bought her for $370,000 at the Fasig-Tipton February Digital Selected Sale. Pounce accelerated late to win the Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3T) on March 2 at Gulfstream Park in her debut for Resolute.
This was followed by an 11th place in the Appalachian Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland and then took third at Penn Oaks. Pounce was off the pace in both of those losses, but she returned to her sprinting form on Saturday.
The mare settled into fifth place but was just two lengths off the lead at six furlongs in 1:12.52. Davis steered Pounce clear at a quarter and she finished strongly from there. Her final time on a grass track rated as hard was 1:35.84.
“She has natural speed so I thought I would be in the lead or second position, but I just really let her go at the start to let her relax because I thought the last ride she used the engine too much,” said Davis.
Sterling Stables Vivid closed late to finish third of 10 sophomore mares.
