Toyota GR86 2025: Mechanical updates, special edition details for Australia

Toyota will bring an upgrade GR86 with numerous mechanical improvements for Australia, along with a special edition offering even greater performance improvements.

The upgraded GR86 is expected to be here in Q4 2024with improvements across the entire range – including revisions to the suspension dampers, electric power steering, engine and throttle control – aimed at improving track handling characteristics.

Toyota has yet to confirm pricing for the facelifted GR86.

Launched alongside the model updates is the limited edition GR86, of which just 86 will be sold. Finished in a unique colour and fitted with bronze wheels, it also features styling tweaks, an updated interior and an upgraded suspension and braking package as standard.

Updates to the entire GR86 line include revisions to the damping characteristics, aimed at providing “better ground contact feel”.

The electric power steering system has also been retuned to improve handling, response and feel at “higher performance levels”.

Models equipped with manual transmissions have had changes to engine torque and throttle control, aimed at responding more directly to accelerator pedal pressure.

Automatic versions have an extended engine speed tolerance range when downshifting, giving these models better traction thanks to a wider torque band.

This limited edition is based on the top-of-the-range GR86 GTS model and is equipped with the optional Dynamic Performance Package as standard, adding ZF Sachs sports dampers and Brembo brakes.

The ZF Sachs dampers are designed to achieve “linear damping characteristics according to piston speed,” which Toyota says helps create comfortable everyday driving as well as agile handling, while reducing body roll when cornering.

Braking power has been improved with four-piston Brembo calipers up front, finished in red, and two-piston calipers at the rear. They replace the two-piston front, single-piston rear setup of the standard GTS.

To round things off, the GR86 Limited Edition is finished in a unique new Forest Shadow Green paint job and features 18-inch bronze alloy wheels. The interior has also been tweaked, featuring black and brown Ultrasuede upholstery and leather upholstery.

All GR86 models are still powered by 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four enginemanufacture 174kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential fitted as standard.

These updates add to previous additions this year, including an optional Dynamic Performance Package for the GTS and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, and automatic high beams on manual models.
