What is the premise?
Cut off is essentially a dungeon crawler in which you play as Sasha, a one-armed girl who gets lost in another world following the tragic disappearance of her family. Gifted with a sword, you’ll need to navigate the various dungeons and use the 3DS or Wii U touchscreen to attack your enemies.
Note, mindlessly slashing enemies won’t do the trick, as you’ll need to keep an eye on their shape and defensive maneuvers, which will let you know when you can attack and from which direction.
Why should I play it?
Of Drinkbox Studios’ following categories, Cut off is perhaps the studio’s most unique game. It shares a lot of visual similarities with the studio’s other titles, but remains the only title to focus entirely on touchscreen gameplay.
With relative simplicity at its core, Severed introduces light RPG mechanics to spice things up, such as a focal gauge that lets you cut off an enemy’s limbs when it’s full, along with trees skills and spells to allow for customization of secondary characters. There’s nothing here that makes you feel particularly overwhelmed and that’s really part of its appeal; Anyone can participate in the Severed and have an absolute blast to it.
Now, obviously, we mentioned earlier that the game is available on Switch, so why exactly are we highlighting this game? Well, the addition of the optional auto stereoscopic 3D effect on the 3DS puts this version above the others in my humble opinion. You also get a stylus, which is definitely a much more intuitive method of controlling your own fingers. No screen smudges here, thank you very much!
