Kambosos and Haney share final thoughts before battle
George Kambosos Jr likes to be the underdog when he takes on Devin Haney on Sunday.
The 28-year-old will enter Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium with three of the four lightweight world titles around him and the backing of 40,000 fans but it’s WBC champion Haney who is the favorite back ever. become undisputed.
Last November ‘Ferocious’ George was barely defeated Teofimo Lopez and caused one of the messes of the year by beating the New Yorker in his own backyard.
“I like the weakness,” he said at his final press conference. “They have been against me my whole career. They said my whole career. I will still be the top dog and after Sunday I will still be the top dog. ”
The week of building up struggles has been very stressful for Kambosos is full of passion and tries his best to offend his American guest.
“I just have fun,” said Kambosos. “I am enjoying this moment. I’m just telling the truth. If it does or doesn’t affect him, so be it. We’re going into it on Sunday, and that’s the big thing.
“I envisioned winning by all means. I have shown everything, every part of this journey. They said we would never be here, but only two people really believed it, me and my father. So I showed my victory, and I envision winning by all means on Sunday.”
Haney has said that the opportunity is a dream come true and while the mission looks seismic from a non-combat perspective, the 24-year-old believes by night in the ring it will come down to the level.
“I feel like a much better fighter,” Haney said. “I have more skills than him. I’ll show him on Sunday. That’s for me to show off in the ring. The odds really don’t matter because I’ll show you no matter what they say. I am superior to him. ”
The mental battle of the past week doesn’t seem to affect Haney and although still without a father and coach due to visa problems The cool and calm game face remains the same.
“I know that he [Kambosos] would try anything he could to try to take me out of my game or keep me from focusing,” Haney said. “But he can say what he wants to say, because regardless I will do what I do when we come into the ring. I will win by all means.
“A win would be gratifying because it means I did it with all the odds, even if things didn’t go in my favor. They tried to do whatever they could to put me at a disadvantage. But when I show up on top, it’s much sweeter. I look forward to bringing the belts back and showing my dad what we’ve accomplished together. “
