Firefighters came to the rescue when the 250-pound dog fell down the basement stairs
When a cat is stuck in a tall tree, everyone’s first instinct is to call the fire department. But who do you call when your 250-pound dog is stuck in your basement?
We can’t say it’s true for everyone, but when you come from the small town of Mingo Junction, Ohio, the fire department doesn’t pick and choose which animals to save. So when Puff the Saint Bernard had a seizure and fell down the stairs in the basement, these local heroes didn’t hesitate to help.
Puff’s mother, Bobbie Jo, was folding the laundry when she momentarily turned her back. Next thing she knew, the gentle giant had had a seizure right in front of the open basement door and fell down the stairs. At 250 pounds, the dynamics of the seizure and the fall pushed Puff down the steep stairs of the basement.
Convinced that the combination of a seizure and a fall had ended her life, Bobbie Jo began screaming for her nephew for help.
Thankfully, Puff is still alive despite not being at his best. The sweet dog continued to have constant seizures throughout the night. Then, when he finally felt better, he was too scared to go through the basement stairs.
But Puff is too heavy and strong for Bobbie Jo to rescue him on her own. So she turned to the Mingo Junction Fire Department for help.
The local firefighters were not only willing to arrive, but were quick to respond and immediately started a rescue plan. Within 15 minutes of her call, they arrived and began working to save Puff, Bobbie Jo’s best friend.
“When someone calls 911, it’s usually their worst day. We perform on their worst day. It is our job to them. We support them, do what needs to be done. Any little thing is an emergency for them, maybe not for us, but we are here for the citizens,” Mingo Junction Fire Chief Brandon Montgomery commented.
Together, they wrapped Puff in a tarp and were able to lift him to safety. Bobbi Jo is so relieved that she doesn’t know how to get her furry best friend out of the basement without help. She couldn’t help but comment that they went above and beyond for her.
Now that Puff has been rescued, the next plan is to get him checked out at the vet.
