GM is rethinking its EV investments and finally arrived to what Toyota seems to be selling a lot of: hybrid. The first hybrid cars were needed yesterday, but we won’t see them until 2027. That’s when every GM division will launch a hybrid or plug-in hybrid model. Don’t expect to see one from Cadillac.

A report from News week confirmed that Cadillac is sticking to its plan to develop electric vehicles and gas-powered models through 2030. Despite GM CEO Mary Barry’s commitment to developing hybrid vehicles in the near future an interview last weekStephanie Obendorfer, senior director of communications for Cadillac, told News week that the automaker will stick to its current gas and electric vehicle model plans and that ultimately, customers will decide the brand’s direction.

While Cadillac will offer a fully electric vehicle portfolio by 2030, we will let customer behavior determine the percentage of us that use exclusively electric vehicles. Our new ICE and EV portfolio along with flexible manufacturing puts us well positioned to transform at the speed of the market.

Outside of the present lyrics and super exclusive CelestiqCadillac has three electric vehicles coming out in the next year or so: the behemoth IQ increasesSimilar to XT6 Vistiq and compact Optiq. This is an addition to the conventional gas-powered product line.

While some think that lineup is a good combination, industry analysts think otherwise. said President and Chief Automotive Analyst at AutoPacific Ed Kim News week that Cadillac’s electric vehicle plans will attract younger customers to the brand, but it could alienate buyers who aren’t ready to buy an electric vehicle; Hybrid cars will be a good middle ground for customers who are wondering.

…adding hybrids would be a good move as many competing luxury brands are currently doing so, and omitting them could turn off customers considering Cadillacs and interested in electrification – just not a fully electric car – there aren’t any suitable products to choose from. GM has many hybrid and PHEV powertrains available in China, and it would probably be wise to leverage its global resources to bring hybrid powertrains to the Cadillac brand.

Models like the Escalade and XT5 would benefit greatly from having a hybrid option. Hopefully Cadillac doesn’t have to regret this “it’s all electric or nothing” stance.
