This wheelchair sharing system allows users to move around the city
Wheelchair mobility has evolved dramatically in recent years, from wheelchairs that allow users to cross-road into the wilderness, to home chairs on sandy beaches. Italian engineering firm Italdesign intends to push the boundaries of mobility even further with the introduction of the WheeM-i wheelchair sharing system.
WheeM-i is an all-electric wheelchair mobility service for wheelchair users. WheeM-i is an acronym for Wheelchair Mobility Inclusive. Wheelchair users book the mobility system through an app. Once scheduled, the user will go to the WheeM-i center and activate their booked wheelchair. The fully electric system then lowers its body and drops a ramp for the wheelchair user to “roll over”.
After the user completes the task around the city, they return the chair back to the nearest WheeM-i center to be charged to the next user. In addition to being all-electric, the WheeM-i is equipped with an on-board collision avoidance system to help drivers reach their destination safely.
