Last week, Volkswagen confirmed its upcoming version of the ID.Buzz electric truck.
Dubbed the ID.California, the electric camping van was mentioned in a VW business update as a new “model derivative” that will be built at the commercial vehicle plant in Hanover , Virtue. That language, along with VW’s earlier confirmation that the ID.Buzz . models to be built in Hanover, says California will be just one of several ID.Buzz variants, along with passenger and cargo versions.

VW teased the production ID.Buzz last month, with full reveal next year and likely US deliveries in 2023. The electric truck, is expected to be the spiritual successor to the classic VW Microbus but based on the platform. The automaker’s dedicated EV platform, MEB, has been around for a long time.
ID.Buzz is announced in January 2017, and we drive it in concept form a year later. The original concept was a passenger van, but VW later revealed a cargo concept version in 2018.
Despite going through a long gestation period, the California is still considered the factory’s first electric cargo truck into production. Nissan has introduced a camper version of it Leaf-based E-NV200, but that model is not production bound.

And Lordstown Motors discussed an RV . version Its Endurance electric truck, but with new manufacturing deals with Foxconn, that project may no longer be a priority.
VW has used the California name for passenger trucks before, based on its existing passenger and commercial vans, but, despite the name, has not offered them in the United States since Westfalia. Perhaps ID.California will be the exception.
