It’s easy to get caught up in life at the expense of our health, but taking care of yourself is important for preventing and treating depression. “Self-care includes the behaviors we implement to take care of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being,” says Dr. Seda Gragossian, PhD, clinical director of Talk Psychotherapy Center in San Diego said. This means eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, engaging in hobbies, relaxing, and having a healthy support system. “A holistic approach to treating depression must involve self-care across all of the above areas of life,” says Dr. Gragossian.
