5 simple ideas to create your dream meditation room


If you happen to live with anyone – be it a roommate, partner, children, or otherwise – you may have experienced great number of in the most recent quarters over the past few years. We have understood to a whole new level that a little time alone is a good thing for our health. Plus, any parent with young children knows that quiet time is a treat luxurious, so as I was trying to figure out what to do with the underutilized loft area at the top of our stairs, I decided: it was time to create a space for solitude. Enter: my new meditation room.

Although I call it my meditation room, my goal is to create an area in the house that everyone in our family can use when they need it. some time to themselves. As I thought about how we were going to use the space, I envisioned an area with my meditation pillows and candles, a small desk for journaling, lots of cozy cushions, and throw chairs for the kids to roll up to. I intentionally wanted it to be decorated a little lower – the bare floor space would not only give my eyes space to breathe, but also give us enough room to spread out the yoga mat and move around.

The only real piece of furniture in the room was this round wooden coffee table that was completely stolen. I wanted it to feel timeless and substantial, as well as the perfect height for me to journal while sitting on my meditation pillow.

For seating, I go with textured floor cushions — this beautiful round velvet cushion from Lulu and Georgia and a soft rug I bought from Target. It’s all about feeling relaxed and soft everything.

Speak to all the senses

Any “emotionless” room should speak to all the senses, so beyond color palettes, think tactile (i.e. all that cozy texture we’ve talked about), plus with sounds and scents. I have a small portable Sonos speaker so I can easily play music to suit my mood (this Creative Focus playlists are my go-to.) For scents, I take a layered approach, with an essential oil roller I can apply to my skin, plus a candle let me light a cigarette while journaling and a few sticks of aromatherapy to drink when I feel tired.

Make it budget-friendly

I spent a basic zero budget on this project, which is perfect as it is one of those home decor that doesn’t require a lot of purchase. It’s all about cozy textures, so the first thing you want to do is stock your home with clothes, blankets, bags, and rugs that you can leave around – whatever you want. can be overlaid to feel like a cocoon is fair game.

Another thing that makes a meditation room budget-friendly is that it’s minimalist in nature. Instead of furniture, think bags and floor cushions. Embrace an empty wall to bring in a moment of meditation. Negative floor space means more space to stretch and move your body.
