2025 Q5 PHEV returns, still Audi’s only plug-in hybrid

The 2025 Audi Q5 S line TFSI e returns for the new model year largely unchanged, after receiving a more advanced active lane control system and a heated steering wheel last year. Divided into three trim levels, the PHEV Q5 prices range from $59,795 to $67,995, including a $1,295 destination charge. For that money, you can buy a five-seat crossover with a turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 17.9 kWh battery that combines to produce 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

It also buys one of the very few PHEVs qualify for a federal EV tax credit of $3,750.

Audi claims this 4,652-pound PHEV crossover SUV can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

In us 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV ReviewWe note that Audi has plans to bring as many as three PHEV models to its U.S. lineup—and even then, the Q5 is still a handful. 19 mile electric range need to do better. Nearly four years later, the tables have turned: While EVs with exceptional range are flooding the market, affordable plug-in hybrids are on track to have an electric range of around 70 miles, powered by new generation battery That could benefit PHEVs as much as electric cars.

As EPA emissions regulations ease to accommodate slower growth in battery-electric vehicle production and sales, PHEVs will fill a gap in some automakers’ lineups. Hyundai’s Genesis brand, for example, plans to launch a series of battery-electric vehicles in the next few years, following the GV60 hatchback and electrified versions of the G80 sedan and GV70 SUV. Genesis dealers are now reportedly asking to sell hybrids and plug-in hybrids in the United States, separate from the latter. No final decisions have been announced.

Likewise, a series of new GM’s Plug-in Hybrid Coming in 2027 should include PHEV versions of the company’s full-size trucks. GM hasn’t had a plug-in hybrid since it discontinued the previous Chevy Volt in favor of the Bolt EV hatchback—which will return in 2026 as the company’s most affordable electric vehicle.

The addition to the PHEV family will help boost Plug-in hybrid vehicle sales increase in the United States that’s already there to hit a record high in 2023 of the more than 250,000 vehicles sold—accounting for about 20 percent of all plug-in vehicle sales, according to the Department of Energy.

But for some brands, the near-term future of plug-in hybrids will be a missed opportunity. Some car companies are too far along in electrification to look back, while others are rolling out stopgap products while they restructure their future lineups. Evidence of Audi’s position is elsewhere in the Q5 PHEV’s past portfolio—though it’s still a real lesson in the ongoing debate about PHEVs in general: Can plug-in hybrid cars be plugged in? and used for the right purposes, or will oil demand still increase?
