2024 Zurich Classic Odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that identified 11 majors
If Nick Hardy and Davis Riley top the leaderboard this week at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, they will become the first team to successfully defend their titles at the event. One big surprise this model is calling for at the 2024 Zurich Classic: McIlroy and Lowry, who have combined for 26 wins on the PGA Tour, barely cracked the top five. McIlroy is set to compete in the his fourth straight event when he tees it up at TPC Louisiana. He has failed to crack the top 10 in seven of eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, while Lowry has finished T-19 or worse in six of his past eight events.
Both players have struggled a lot on the grass court this season. McIlroy enters the 2024 Zurich Classic ranked 78th in strokes gained: putting (0.119) and 72nd in putting average (1,758), a big reason why he is 98th in scoring average (70 ,44). Meanwhile, Lowry ranks 99th in strokes gained: putts (-0.012) and 143rd in putts per set (29.38), which doesn’t bode well for his chances at the top of the weekly rankings. This is theirs.
Another surprise: Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith, 35-1 longshots, made a strong run to the title. They have a much better chance of winning than their odds imply, so they are a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.
This Canadian duo will be a dangerous pairing this week, with Conners providing stability while Pendrith has a high ceiling. Conners has yet to miss a cut this season in 10 starts on the PGA Tour, securing top-25 finishes in three of his last five events. He is also one of the best ball strikers on tour, ranking second in greens ratio (72.65%) and fourth in strokes gained: green approach (0.872) . Meanwhile, Pendrith is coming off an 11th-place finish at the Corales Puntacana Championship and he enters this week’s event ranked ninth in driving distance (308.9) and 22nd in strokes gained gain: push the ball (0.538).
