2024 Volvo EX90 coming to Australia, XC90 facelift unconfirmed

Volvo’s flagship electric SUV will make the trip Down Under by the end of 2024, but it’s unclear whether an upgraded version of the petrol-powered XC90 that will accompany it globally will arrive with it.

The updated XC90 has not yet been revealed. At launch, it will provide Volvo with a gasoline alternative to the EX90 in markets that are not ready for pure electric power as it will phase out internal combustion systems globally by 2030.

In Australia, however, the brand has committed to using only electric vehicles by 2026.

“EX90 comes with a leather plate [of the XC90]but my preference is not to take it all,” Volvo Car Australia CEO Stephen Connor recently told the media.

Mr Connor said there could be a crossover between the final models of the XC90 currently on sale in Australia and the first model of the EX90, depending on how production ramps up.

At the time of 2024, the current XC90 will turn 8 years old. If it continues until the end of Volvo’s internal combustion engine production in 2030, the skeleton of the petrol and plug-in hybrid XC90 will turn 14 years old.

That’s a long time for the average luxury car, but nothing new for Volvo. The first-generation XC90 has also been around for 14 years, garnering support from family buyers in the process.

Its death in Australia will come sooner than in the rest of the world as the brand plans to only sell electric vehicles Down Under by 2026.

Although upstarts such as Tesla, BYD and its sister companies at Polestar are already electric-only, Volvo plans to be the first brand to fully transition to pure electric power in Australia first. that already offers petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options locally.

“We will not wait until 2030, we will not wait for the global strategy to be in place. I proposed to Gothenburg the other day, and we will be completely electric by 2026 in Australia,” said Mr Connor.
