That includes unique fender lights like the ones on the Sierra HD. All Canyons also has wide off-road suspension like the Colorado Z71 and Trail Boss. Not available narrow rail version, narrow body, even on the base two-wheel drive Elevation. That suspension also means all canyons have about two inches of lift over the base Chevy Colorados. The GMCs are also fitted with standard 32-inch tires, and they don’t have a front spoiler to provide a better angle of approach. The bed, although it has only one decoration, has a unique storage compartment in the back door.
On the subject of suspension specs, the Elevation and AT4 versions have a ground clearance of 9.6 inches. Denali increases that to 10.5 inches, and the AT4X has 10.6 inches. It also receives multipoint spool valve shocks from the ZR2. But we’ll talk more about what’s on the AT4X in a bit.
Under the hood of the Canyon is just one engine. It is the most powerful version of the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine produces 310 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Two-wheel drive is standard in height and other accessories are standard with all-wheel drive.
Inside the Canyon is very similar to Colorado, but it has some unique markings. It has vents that are more integrated into the square panel design, instead of Chevy’s round vent. It also has a different shaped dashboard and trim. However, the really big difference comes on the Denali and AT4X trim. Denali has real wood trim with laser engraving. It’s also made of genuine leather and has fancy stitching. Naturally, it has all the interior conveniences like an 11-inch instrument display (8 inches is standard on the lower trim Canyons), an 11.3-inch infotainment screen, and a head-up display. GMC exclusive head-up. The AT4X loses the wood trim, but it has a bold black and white interior with bright red accents all around.
All the canyons, however, are reasonably equipped with a large touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. They can finally be equipped with a factory sunroof. Standard safety features include automatic emergency brake with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view camera and rear cross-traffic alert with pedestrian detection are all available in optional and accessory packages.
Now we have arguably the biggest news, the birth of GMC on the ZR2. It’s the AT4X and it has all the same off-road features. It has the aforementioned suspension, a unique front fender, skid plates, locking front and rear differentials, 33-inch tires, and a Baja drive mode. It also has a special Edition 1 model that brings even more. It features 17-inch wheels with nut-mount, front safari bar with 30-inch off-road light bar, Comeup winch, upgraded skids, special rails and badges.
Production of the new Canyon begins early next year. GMC is currently taking pre-orders for the AT4X, which will go into production in the spring. Pricing hasn’t been announced for all models, but the base Canyon will start around $40,000. AT4X starts at $63,350 do not have destination, has yet to be announced.
