Major League Baseball Fans are always quick to point out when the referee makes a controversial ball call or strike – especially when that call goes against their team.
But what about when a umpire goes the whole game without calling a single order wrong?
That’s what referee Pat Hoberg did in Houston Astros‘win Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the 2022 World Series on Saturday. Every Umpire Score CardFollowing the umpire’s ball calls and strikes throughout every MLB game, Hoberg had his own version of a “perfect match”.
Umpire Scorecard, which uses MLB’s advanced field-tracking data to evaluate the accuracy of every ball and strike call in a game to determine how those calls affect the outcome of a game fight, is given. on Twitter in July 2020, just before the start of the 2020 MLB season due to pandemic changes.
Of the hundreds of games the platform has watched since then, none have been called perfect – until Hoberg performed in the Astros’ 5-2, Game 2 win.
Umpire Scorecards database really back from the start of the 2015 season – and Hoberg’s Game 2 performance remains the only perfect match it’s ever recorded.
However, as the tweet points out, Hoberg has quietly built a reputation for his accuracy. Indicators on the Umpire Scorecards website lists the referee at the 100th percentile for accuracy, the 99th percentile for better-than-expected accuracy, and the 94th percentile for consistency.
Hoberg is described as “MLB .’s Most Accurate Referee“during a USA Today feature in June 2022 that used Umpire Scorecard data. Authors of FOX Sports MLB Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman Hoberg shouted about them @CespedesBBQ Twitter account before the first game of the second half on Saturday when it was revealed that the referee would call the ball and go on strike.
Hoberg’s following has only grown since Umpire Scorecards announced his perfect score Sunday morning, quickly earning him praise from some corners of baseball Twitter.
Hoberg is even recognized from within MLB circles as a San Francisco Giants third wheel Evan Longoria shouted at him on Instagram and FOX Sports broadcaster Jason Benetti shared an anecdote from New York Mets Buck Showalter manager early in the season.
As a TV station FOX Sports Joe Davis pointed out that during the match, Hoberg’s friends and family were also present to watch his history-making night.
More history will be made as the World series moves to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia as the Phillies and Astros each lead the series 2-1.
