2022 Digital Penalty Coverage


After taking a break in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Digital Shootout returns with a vengeance on Bonaire’s calm waters in June — and Full coverage of the top events on the underwater photography calendar currently streaming live.

This time, 65 guests from around the world joined the 20-person staff for two weeks of amazing diving (courtesy of Divi Flamingo Beach Resort), learning workshops, and inspirational presentations. As usual, participants get to play with the latest and greatest cameras, cases, strobes, lights and accessories, as well as enter a number of friendly competitions for a chance to score a sweet award number.

Digital Shooting: The World’s Largest Underwater Photography Event

The full coverage of the 19th Annual Digital Match is currently living. Held every year in June and sponsored by Backscatter Underwater Videos & PhotoDigital Shootout is the largest and longest running underwater photography and videography learning event in the world.

Learning – The Core Mission of Digital Penalties

This year’s event covers more than 24 seminars and workshops. Topics include photo and video fundamentals, creative lighting, splits, advanced video techniques, video editing techniques, visual storytelling, and more.

With a 3:1 visitor-to-staff ratio, Digital Shootout has more educators and staff than any other underwater photography workshop in the world. Among the teaching staff are Backscatter founder Berkley White, Backscatter CEO Jim Decker, Adobe Certified Professional Erin Quigley, Brazilian Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cristian Dimitrius, and others.

No other underwater photography event in the world has this number demo device presented annually at Digital Shootout. The demonstration camera system has been provided from Nauticam, Isotta and Backscatteralong with strobes, lights and more to give guests the tools they need to create top-quality underwater images. Pegasus Thruster even bring their tank-mounted DPV for the participants to run around the reef.

Although this is mainly a learning event, there is a picture contest at the end of two weeks. While there may be some serious people putting a lot of work, the atmosphere is friendly and supportive, with many past winners and advanced shooters offering advice to others.

This year’s highest honor, The Jim Watt Award, introduced to Boston Sea Rovers intern Russell Laman in 2021. This year, Digital Match timings were aligned to give guests the option to wait in the dark and attempt to capture the light show. magical bioluminescence of small shrimp called Ostracods. The judges all agreed that Russell Laman’s image captured the magical moment and received two thumbs up from the casket of Jim Watt.
