Volkswagen is preparing to roll out a software upgrade for the ID.4 electric crossover that improves the infotainment system’s performance and adds a number of new features.
Volkswagen of America said in a press release earlier this week that the upgrade will roll out to the ID.4 2021 models first, followed by certain ID.4 2022 models. Owners will be officially notified when new software is available for their vehicle.
Unlike Tesla or Polestar, this won’t be an over-the-air update that can be done in an owner’s driveway. VW is asking 2021 ID.4 owners to schedule an appointment directly with dealers to install the new software, a process that also requires a 12-volt battery replacement. The automaker will then contact owners of what it calls a “limited number” of 2022 models for instructions.

New software adds toll routing functionality to the navigation system. This allows drivers to filter out VW-sponsored Electrify America stations, to take advantage of three years of free fast charging that comes with ID.4 ownership, as well as charging rate filtering. Previously, VW said Plug & Charge capability would also appear on previous ID.4s.
VW is also adding an automatic hold feature, which prevents the vehicle from rolling when the driver releases the brake pedal while stopping.
