We follow a vegetarian diet plus probiotics, digestive aids and several other supplements including fish oil. I consulted with a retired veterinarian who is currently consulting on dietary issues. It was a relief to have her help.

We find this hard to believe. Our Basset Hound is allergic to milk. It was the late eighties and can’t remember the food we had to buy. Our Lucy had run out of milk, which is found in most dog foods, no longer vomiting.

Salmon— Purina Pro Plan for sensitive skin and stomach other than a probiotic. Most itching and yeast production comes from the gut. A probiotic plus omega 3 from salmon eliminates intestinal problems and the risk of avian allergies. Sorry for the lengthy explanation, I have had 8 apes with allergies and I am in the veterinary field and this diet is a miracle. Good luck!!!

I have a basset/beagle that is allergic to all sorts of things. We tried many different foods, even kangaroo meat, and ended up choosing hydrolyzed soybeans.

It’s also worth noting that the dogs have a flower, or environment, in their coat. Wash too often and skin problems may not end. Let them be dogs! I rarely wash my Basset. I use Dawn when I do. They go to the barn with me, run and roll in the grass… if they roll on something nasty (feces or dead bodies), they’ll take a sponge if not a full bath. Rare. I feel Natural diamond adult. A few treatments. Emphasis on small volume.
In short, skin problems are often caused by owners being too clean and damaging the dog’s normal coat and not allowing them to be dogs. Like children, they need to play in the ground. Lick some of their toes…
I applaud the diligence required to care for dogs with skin problems. I had a Westie years ago, it suffered a lot no matter what. I got it. Letting her be a not-so-white Westie helped the most.

we went on a diet and as a result he can eat rice, chicken, pork and sweet potatoes. We’ve been cooking for him for years without a hitch. It depends on the dog and what it is allergic to…. I spent a small amount of money on the vet and they tested 5 different grasses that don’t even grow here. They continued to put him on courses of antibiotics and prednisone. Good luck.

I have bassets for eleven years! They had some problems, the eldest was eleven years old, had an autoimmune skin disease and the only delicious food for many years, it proved to be Eukanuba. Every time we try a different brand, it’s a disaster. Stomach problems, skin problems, excessive hair loss, etc.

I don’t have them anymore. Both passed away but they had allergies. The only food we have a lot of is Rachel Ray Nutrition. Beef didn’t help, but chicken did.

First, it’s any land animal other than chickens, as chickens are most likely to cause skin problems and allergies. Then it’s fish. Then it ended up being a hypoallergenic food because he had a severe skin allergy that caused skin infections, itching, and excessive licking. Medicine baths (once a week) and hypoallergenic foods have done him the best.

At first, I was vegetarian from Royal Canin and could only buy it from the vet. Then I found Zignature Limited Ingredient Kangaroo Formula (they have it in 4 lb dry, 25 lb dry, and wet canned), and it’s amazing.

I have my girl tested for allergies. It’s also worth it. What I found out was that she was allergic to life. Her food allergies are so severe I can’t find any dry foods that don’t have at least 3 or more of her allergies. My biggest problem is that she is sensitive to every source of protein except bison. I can’t afford to feed her with bison. So I found a dry ice that she can use, however she still has to take Benadryl because of her environmental issues. Give yourself a headache and get tested so you know exactly what to avoid.
