Moroccan authorities say 18 migrants have been killed in an attempt to cross the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

About 2,000 migrants stormed the high fence surrounding Spain’s North African region in a violent two-hour skirmish with border officers.

It marks the first incursion since Spain and Morocco mended diplomatic relations last month.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry said casualties occurred when people tried to climb the iron fence.
