One big surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Wyndham Championship: Horschel (25-1), an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top contenders, stumbled this week and just missed the top 10. Horschel is coming off an impressive T-2 at the Open Championship, his best-ever finish at a major championship.
Horschel had struggled before that trip, however, finishing T-41 or worse in three straight starts, including a missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open. Horschel’s iron play had been inconsistent all season, and he entered the Wyndham Championship ranked 102nd in greens in regulation (65.65%) and 120th in strokes gained: approach to greens (-0.113), which doesn’t bode well for his chances of finishing atop the leaderboard this week. Another surprise: Aaron Rai, a 40-1 underdog, is in a strong race to win the title. He has a better chance of winning than his odds suggest, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a big payday.
Rai doesn’t have as much of an explosion off the tee as some of the other top contenders, but he’s incredibly accurate with his drives. In fact, the 29-year-old ranks third on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (71.64%). He’s also an elite putter, ranking sixth in greens in regulation (71.11%) and eighth in strokes gained: approach greens (.623). Those impressive stats have helped Rai finish T-7 or better in three of his last four PGA Tour starts.
