World War II bomb disposed of near Hereford Racecourse

An Army bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion of a World War II-era bomb in the parking lot of Hereford racecourse on March 5. The Department of Defense said a Spigot anti-tank gun The 29 mm Mortar was found in nearby Aylesbrook Road.

An army explosives disposal (EOD) team attended at the request of West Mercia Police and cordoned off the area. After the people were evacuated from the streets, the army carried out a controlled explosion in the racecourse parking lot.

Camilla Esling, general manager of Hereford, said on Monday morning: “The bomb was not actually found at our site. “It’s in a local housing estate, across from our parking lot, which is the closest empty space for the military to handle it.

“We couldn’t get in touch but they resolved the issue as quickly as possible. There was a gate to the parking lot so they could clean the area easily.

“Luckily we have the space to accommodate that and luckily it’s not on the actual track before our next meeting on Saturday.”
