Wildlife encounters are always awe-inspiring and humbling, whether accidental or intentional. For many, the dream of seeing a wild animal like a lion or a bobcat in its natural habitat is often just a dream. However, for some lucky individuals, that dream becomes a reality. Natalie Therese and her partner, April, were fortunate enough to have an unforgettable encounter while driving home from a motel along the Columbia River in Washington.
As they walked along the rain-soaked streets, something unexpected caught their attention. The wet, foggy weather made it difficult to make out what lay ahead on the road—it appeared to be nothing more than a ball of fur. “My companion thought it was just a pile of dirt or something!” Natalie shared with Dodo Bird.
But as they got closer, the situation became much clearer and more urgent. “I yelled for help and stopped,” Natalie recalled. They looked like abandoned puppies! But to her surprise, the mysterious object turned out to be three tiny baby otters. It seemed the otters had become confused and stranded on the road after their mother swerved to avoid another car.
With her worried mother probably watching from the edge of the forest, Natalie, an avid animal lover, felt compelled to help the otter family. She gently coaxed her three children away from the dangerous path, trying her best to convey her intention to help despite the language barrier between humans and otters.
“I gently encouraged them to stay off the road,” Natalie described. Wanting to make sure the family had enough space to reunite safely, she stepped back from the car and waited patiently. After a few tense moments, the mother otter appeared, and all three cubs ran toward her, away from the road.
“I waited a few more minutes to make sure they didn’t run back into the road,” Natalie added. Otters are particularly vulnerable to traffic because their bodies limit their speed and agility on land, making it difficult for them to avoid oncoming vehicles. Additionally, their tendency to travel in family groups increases the risk of at least one member being hit by a car.

Despite a history of violent behavior toward animals — including a widely circulated video showing his Pitbull brutally attacking a helpless cat — the individual continued to harm animals without prior intervention from law enforcement.
Fortunately, thanks to Natalie’s quick intervention, the otter family was safely returned to the wild. Her actions demonstrate the importance of human compassion and awareness in protecting the natural world and its creatures. Reflecting on the experience, Natalie shared, “I was moved and moved to tears by the whole experience. Nature and its creatures are so beautiful.”
