Polar bears usually spend most of their time in the sea ice around the Arctic Ocean, but a group of bears have decided to live in abandoned houses on a remote island in Russia.
There are photos to prove it.
Wildlife and underwater photographer, Dmitry Kokh, made a much-anticipated trip to Chukotka and Wrangel Island in hopes of catching polar bears in their natural habitat.
He did find some polar bears, but not all of them where he thought they would be.
“As the furthest and closest eastern part of the Russian Arctic, this place is hard to get to but also hard to forget. We cruise along the coast and cover more than 1200 miles of unspoiled landscapes, villages lost in time, diverse fauna and vibrant waters,” said Kokh. posted on Instagram related to his trip.
He encountered something unique when he arrived on the deserted Kolyuchin Island. This island was once inhabited by people who ran a weather station, but it has been abandoned ever since.
However, the buildings are being put to good use.
“Nature always sends you something when you least expect it – as we passed through Kolyuchin Island near the northern coast of Chukotka, we saw some movement in the abandoned windows there. And as we approached – it was the bears,” shared Kokh on its website.
Polar bears are living in the house and Kokh has captured amazing photos of the bears sticking their heads out the windows, standing on the front porch and lounging in the yard.
He shared them with the world who couldn’t have enough.
