Why you should consider attaching lights to your dim box

Instead of bouncing light underneath your subject, this method can make life easier.

Rubidium Wu, who passed by Crimson engine, demonstrating the ability to attach lights to your dimming box. It was a cherry on top of some already good light. The beauty of this comes from the convenience and ability to move the camera along with additional lighting. For some, this can also be a run and gun solution for document work. For him, it’s an alternative to a much more cumbersome studio setup.

What is Uplight and why does it work?

Illuminating subjects with uplights is not a new idea. Sometimes it could be a tungsten lamp placed on a stand C or just a white card to reflect light back to the subject’s face. In Wu’s case, he seems to be using a tube light under the camera to fill in his face. It helps to smooth out the shadows on the face. I find that it needs to be subtle. Too much light and you will create a sense of horror.

I think this setup is a really smart idea. My only worry with this “electrified dimming box” is the quality of the LEDs being used. Personally, I feel that skin tone is too important to run the risk of using incorrect lighting. If you can choose a used Westcott 10 x 3″ flexible light mat (they are discontinued) it could be the perfect accessory. If you end up using a lamp like Wu’s, then some film ND will help dim it and avoid flickering. That way you’ll be less likely to see any flickering when dimming the electronics.
