When it comes to skin retouching, it’s important to remember that, in general, less is more. The biggest mistake new photographers often make when retouching portraits is simply going overboard by correcting small imperfections or the like until the person looks fake. Everyone needs some variation to look human, and perhaps the most important skill a professional retoucher has is a good sense of balance. One of the best things you can do is finish editing, then tabulate the image in a day or at least a few hours. Then come back to it with fresh eyes and reassess your work.
