Why GWM thinks more expensive, premium SUVs could be winners in Australia

GWM has opened the door to more expensive SUVs as it continues to significantly expand its lineup.

“Right now, our flagship product is the Tank 500. We want to develop these markets properly, develop these markets into a larger volume,” said GWM Australia and New Zealand managing director Charles Zhao. Car expert.

“And at the same time, we focus not only on the product but also on customer satisfaction.

“We won’t have that much more expensive car in Australia next year, but the door is still open for those more expensive cars. Those cars won’t be the big sellers, the 700, the 800.

“But maybe when we see consistent and steady market growth, bigger market share, better customer satisfaction, we can consider that.

“We want to focus on 300 and 500 in the short term, not 400 or 700 at the moment in the short term. That is [in] one year.”

The company has previously said that if the business case is made for the Tank 700, It will take about 6-9 months to launch here.

While products from Great Wall Motor’s premium Wey brand have been phased out of the Australian market, the newer Tank brand continues to push into the premium segment.

The flashy Tank 800 has yet to be revealed, but has been previewed as a concept in 2021. It’s set to sit at the top of the Tank brand, which is sold in Australia as a sub-brand under the GWM badge.

The Tank 400 and Tank 700 are now on sale in China. Both feature a similar angular design language, as opposed to the more conservative, chrome-heavy Tank 500 and the boxy Tank 300.

“I wonder if I can [pose] “It’s all about how much customers are willing to spend on a GWM,” said Steve Maciver, marketing and communications director for GWM Australia and New Zealand.

“What we’ve seen over the last three or four years, the average selling price of a GWM in 2020 was around $23,000. Now that number has gone up to over $40,000 in a fairly short period of time.

“GWM’s average selling price has been increasing, which shows that customers are interested in what we’re doing, they like the product, they still see value, and we have to test that with the right product.

“We take our time. We’re not rushing into more expensive products, but if there’s a product that we think there’s a need for in Australia, we’ll certainly look at it.

“Regardless of price point, value is still very important for any car brand. I certainly think for us, that’s at the core of what we do.

“This doesn’t mean you can’t offer products that are more premium in terms of appearance and price, but the value still has to be there for the consumer.

“If consumers see that, whether it’s a Jolion that costs $25,000 or another Tank that costs $90,000, $95,000, as long as there’s value for the customer, then we think price is probably not as important, but there are products that are capable of going beyond that price point.”

The most expensive GWM model in Australia today is Tank 500 Ultra HybridPrice $73,990 including driver.

It is becoming plug-in hybrid option By 2025, prices could be even more expensive.

If the Tank 700 and Tank 800 are released to the market, their prices will certainly be even more expensive.

The Tank 700 plug-in hybrid went on sale in China earlier this year, powered by a 265kW/560Nm turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine paired with a 120kW/400Nm electric motor, a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 37.1kWh three-cell lithium battery.

Total system output is 385kW and 800Nm, with an electric range of 90km on the WLTC cycle.

This five-seater SUV measures 5090mm long, 2061mm wide and 1952mm high with a 3000mm wheelbase.

For reference, one Toyota LandCruiser 300 series measures 5015mm long, 2000mm wide and 1950mm high on a 2850mm wheelbase.

Wading depth is 900mm or 970mm with gas springs.

The Tank 400 is a more affordable SUV, slotting between the smaller Tank 300 and larger Tank 500 in price in its home market.

The car is 4985mm long, 1960mm wide and 1905mm high on a 2850mm wheelbase.

In China, the car is also only available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but it uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The engine produces 180kW of power and 380Nm of torque, combined with a 120kW/400Nm electric motor for a total system output of 300kW and 750Nm.

The car is also equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 37.1kWh three-component lithium battery.

This drivetrain is shared with the Tank 500.
